Pet scan and Cancer

Pet Scan and Cancer – Cancer is an intricate disease which will begin in the body when there are abnormal cells growing and dividing into different tissue to produce cells. When the abnormal cells are produced they take place of the healthy cells which is how the surrounding tissue will slowly grow to be cancerous. To keep the body healthy immune cells have to grow and the extra cells will grow a tumor which may or may not be malignant. There are benign tumors that are not cancerous and can be removed in most cases. These tumors won’t come back and they won’t spread to other parts of the body. The cells in this tumor will spread. If you have a benign tumor then it isn’t life threatening and a tumor is usually benign when it is caught when it first begins.

Pet scan and cancer are linked because through a pet scan the physician will have the ability to see what type of tumor it is and how severe it is. The cells in malignant tumors are abnormal and they will divide without control. These cancer cells will invade and destroy the tissue that is surrounding the area. This is called metastasis and the cells will continue to grow. There millions of new cancer cases that are diagnosed with each year. The PET scan and cancer have assisted the physicians in catching a tumor while it’s still curable.

The PET and CT are essential when it comes to the diagnostic tools that the physicians will use to find out what the presence is. There is imaging which will evaluate the disease so that the patient can undergo the most aggressive of treatments. There are different types of treatments available and the doctor will determine whether or not the therapy is going to be evasive or not. Pet scan and cancer reveals that the patient may need a radioactive glucose or whether or not the cells are metabolic and synthesizing through the glucose.

The PET will determine how the physicians are going to treat the cancer. They will have the freedom to change the treatment if there isn’t anything effective taking place. To avoid the cost and the discomfort of different procedures the PET and CT will determine which treatments are fitting for the tumor. After the treatments have been completed then there will be a follow up which will assess the treatment and determine whether or not the activity is responding. There is often scar tissue with PET scan and cancer.
